Coming soon: a new text editor

Coming soon. This feature is planned and not yet in enrola. What you see when it arrives may differ from this description. We will update this article when it is released.

Every box in enrola where you can format text, from email templates to applicants' answers, uses the same editor. The editor enrola uses today is no longer updated by its makers. It is planned to be replaced with a modern, open-source editor that is simpler to use and is updated regularly.

What will change

Toolbars that fit each field

Each kind of field will get a toolbar with the buttons it needs, and nothing it doesn't:

  • Descriptions, notes and answers: text style (paragraph or heading), italic, bulleted and numbered lists, and links.
  • Emails you send: text style, bold, italic, underline, lists, links and clear formatting.
  • Email templates: the email buttons, plus a way to add merge fields. See Coming soon: searchable merge fields in email templates.
  • Opportunity text sent to job boards: bulleted and numbered lists only, as today.

The page tools in today's email toolbar (Save, New Page, Print and Templates) will go. You will save with enrola's own Save or Send button, as you do now.

Links

Adding a link will ask for the web address and the text to show. Email, phone and merge-field links will work too.

Easier to use with a keyboard and on a phone

  • Ctrl+B, Ctrl+I, Ctrl+U and Ctrl+K (Cmd on a Mac) will work as you expect, and a Keyboard shortcuts link will list them.
  • You will be able to reach the toolbar from the keyboard, and every button will have a name that screen readers read out.
  • On public application forms, the toolbar will fit a phone screen, with buttons that are easy to tap.
  • The editor will follow dark mode properly.

Merge fields that can't break

Merge fields in emails will show as clear markers that can't be split or half formatted by accident.

Arriving gradually

The new editor may reach some organisations before others. Until it reaches yours, the current editor carries on working.

What stays the same

  • Everything already saved looks the same. Emails, job board adverts and PDFs show your text as before.
  • Merge tags such as [@application_first_name@] keep working in saved templates.
  • Opportunity text stays lists only, so job boards, including Find an apprenticeship (shown as NAS in enrola), get the same text.
  • Your text is saved when you click out of a box on a record, as today.

What you might need to do

Nothing. You don't need to re-save or re-format anything.
